What are the services of digital marketing?

You have a proposal in front of you and every line on it sounds reasonable. The question behind it is the awkward one: what are the services of digital marketing, and which of them is this document actually promising to hand you?

The honest answer is that a service is whatever produces something you can open. Everything else on the page is a description of effort.

This post is about the artefacts rather than the categories. If you want the field defined first, start with what digital marketing means, and our own list sits here so you can see whose slice you are reading.

Digital marketing deliverables, service by service

The field is wider than any single supplier sells. It divides conventionally into seven types, and most of the money in the United Kingdom moves through search, social, content and email.

What follows is not a list of what we sell. It is what each line means when somebody, anybody, writes it on a document and asks you to pay for it.

One artefact per line. Where the middle column is empty, so is the invoice.

Search work is the one people find hardest to picture, so what an SEO month contains is set out in full.

What digital marketing includes as standard

Underneath the service lines there is a floor, and it is the same floor whichever service you are buying. Four things belong in any month, and none of them is an extra.

  • Measurement. A number that existed before the work started, so the work has something to be measured against.
  • Access. Analytics, Search Console, the ad account and the site, all reachable by you without asking.
  • Ownership. Everything made in your name, on your domains, in your accounts, and it stays yours when the arrangement ends. Google documents how to add a supplier as a user rather than handing over the account itself.
  • Somebody answerable. A named person who replies, rather than an inbox.

Four things nobody should have to negotiate for, and one of them is only a name.

Marketing retainer deliverables, month by month

A retainer is a promise about a repeating month, which makes it the easiest thing in the world to leave vague. The fix is to ask what the same month looks like twice.

Ask what arrives in month one, what arrives in month four, and what would be different between them. A retainer that cannot answer that is selling availability rather than work.

Rates are the other half of it, and they are published. The 2026 contractor rates report puts a United Kingdom day rate on each of these roles, which is the closest thing to a public price list this trade has.

Published UK day rates for marketing roles in 2026: marketing consultant £418, SEO consultant £374, paid social specialist £335, social media manager £326, social media analyst £283.PUBLISHED UK DAY RATES, 2026Marketing consultant£418SEO consultant£374Paid social specialist£335Social media manager£326Social media analyst£283Divide a monthly fee by one of these and you have the days it buys.
Published day rates, so you can work out roughly how many days a monthly fee is buying.

Employing the same skills instead has its own published figure. The average base salary for a marketing executive in the United Kingdom is £30,201 across the salaries reported to Indeed, before employer costs and before anybody has bought a tool.

Where a digital marketing service list turns into words

Some lines are activities wearing a deliverable's clothes. They are not always dishonest, but they cannot be checked, and a line that cannot be checked is a line you are taking on trust.

  • Strategy, with no document at the end of it.
  • Optimisation, with no baseline recorded before it started.
  • Engagement, with no definition of what counts as engaged.
  • Monitoring, which is somebody having the tab open.
  • Brand awareness, unless a number was agreed in advance for what awareness means here.

Every one of them is unbillable once you ask what arrived.
Five lines that are perfectly honest and still leave you holding nothing.

This is what buyers are describing when they say the money went nowhere. The complaint is almost never about the price itself.

If you're paying four figures and all you get is a random monthly PDF and a cold reception if you call then yeah, I'd say you're being ripped off.

Read that again and notice what is missing from it. He is not disputing the fee, he is saying that nothing arrived which he could look at.

That is a deliverables problem wearing a trust problem's coat, and it sits separately from the question of whether the supplier is legitimate at all.

Comparing two proposals on digital marketing scope of work

Two documents can print the same six words and mean very different amounts of work. Headings do not compare, so set them aside and compare the artefacts.

Five questions do most of the work, and you ask them of every line rather than of the document as a whole.

Five questions, asked line by line. The right-hand column is where the money goes quiet.
Ask of every lineA line that is workA line that is words
What arrives?A named artefactAn activity
Where does it land?A URL, a file, or an accountNowhere you can open
When?A date, or a stated cadenceOngoing
Who does it?A named person or a named roleOur team
How would you know? You can go and look at itYou take their word

Where two proposals genuinely differ, the difference is usually inside one service rather than spread across all of them. Putting the same comparison in writing is the quickest way to find which one.

There are 5.7 million private sector businesses in the United Kingdom and 5.64 million of them have fewer than fifty people. That is most of the market reading proposals with nobody in-house to check them.

If two documents have landed and you cannot tell them apart, send them over and we will say where they differ. That is a read rather than a project, and it commits you to nothing.

The one question to ask of digital marketing services

Ask what would have to be true, in a month, for this line to have happened. If the answer is a thing you could open, it is a service.

If the answer is that somebody would have been working, it is an intention. Intentions are fine, and they belong in the conversation rather than on the invoice.

Straight answers

Still not answered? There is a person at the other end

What are the services of digital marketing, in short?

Search, paid search, social, content, email, websites and the analysis underneath them. Each of those is genuinely a service only where it produces something you can open: an edited page, a live campaign, a written post, a sent email, a report with your own numbers in it. The categories are the easy half.

The seven types, in full

How much does a digital marketing agency cost?

There is no single figure, and anyone quoting one without a source is guessing. What is published is day rates: the 2026 contractor rates report puts an SEO consultant at £374 a day in the United Kingdom and a social media manager at £326. Divide a monthly fee by a relevant rate and you have a rough sense of the days it buys.

Is it worth it to hire a digital marketing agency?

It depends on whether you would otherwise employ the skill or leave the work undone. Employing a marketing executive starts around a £30,201 base salary before employer costs, and one person rarely covers search, paid, social and content at once. Where the work is genuinely part-time across several skills, buying it is usually the cheaper arrangement.

What are the top 10 digital marketing agencies in the UK?

We decline that one, and it is worth saying why rather than pretending the list exists. Ranking suppliers means reviewing competitors, and we publish only our own reviews. Any list you find was assembled by somebody with a stake in its order, so read it as advertising and go back to comparing deliverables.

How do I know if my digital marketing agency is legit?

Ask for a breakdown of what last month bought, in artefacts. A supplier doing the work can answer in minutes because the artefacts already exist. One that cannot will answer in activity words instead, which is the tell, and it is a fairer test than any credential or badge on a website.

The full check

What should be in a monthly report?

The numbers that existed before the work started, the same numbers now, what changed on the site or in the account, and what happens next month because of it. A report that only shows numbers going up has not told you which work caused it, and a report nobody can act on is a receipt rather than a report.

Can I ask for the work in my own accounts?

Yes, and asking before the work starts saves an argument later. Analytics, Search Console, the ad account and the website should all sit in your name with the supplier added as a user. The history then stays with you when the arrangement ends, which is the part people usually discover too late.

What happens next

  1. You send the form. Within one working day a written reply arrives, from a person.

  2. A short audit follows, in plain English, with the price of fixing what it finds.

  3. If it reads right, work starts inside a week. If not, keep the audit.
