What are 7 types of digital marketing?

Ask what are 7 types of digital marketing and the seven you get back depends entirely on who is counting. One list gives four, the next gives thirteen, and none of them says why.

That is not carelessness. Some lists carve the field by channel, meaning the place the marketing happens. Others carve it by what a business can actually buy from a supplier, which is a different cut through the same material.

This post takes the second cut, because it is the one a buyer can act on. If you want the field itself rather than the shopping list, start with what digital marketing covers and come back.

It matters more than a taxonomy argument should. Of the 5.7 million UK private sector businesses at the start of 2025, 5.64 million had fewer than 50 people, on the Department for Business and Trade's figures, so most of the counting is read by an owner with no marketing department to translate it.

So every type below carries the job it does rather than the acronym it answers to.

Why the lists of digital marketing types disagree

The Chartered Institute of Marketing's channels course also lists seven: SEO, PPC, social media, content marketing, display advertising, email and websites. It is a perfectly good seven, and it is not the seven below.

The difference is what each list is for. A course teaches the digital marketing channels a marketer will work in, so content and display earn their own slots. A supplier lists what you can put on an order, so content sits inside search and display sits outside what most small businesses buy at all.

Neither list is describing the whole discipline either, ours included. Affiliate deals, influencer work and digital PR are all real parts of the field and appear on neither.

Two seven-item lists of digital marketing types laid side by side and aligned row for row. The top four rows are the same slot on both lists: SEO and search, PPC and paid search, social media and social, websites and websites. The bottom three differ: the Chartered Institute of Marketing lists content marketing, display advertising and email, where pomegranate lists brand, AI search and all six bought together.TWO LISTS, BOTH SEVENThe CIM courseCounted as channelsWhat we sellCounted as things to buySEOSearchPPCPaid searchSocial mediaSocialWebsitesWebsitesContent marketingBrandDisplay advertisingAI searchEmailAll six togetherFour slots match. The three under the rule on each side match nothing on the other.
Two seven-item lists, four slots in common and three unshared on each side. Both are honest, which is the annoying part.

The money is a third way of cutting it, and it disagrees with both. Search took 44% of UK digital ad spend in 2025, growing 6% to £17.9bn, and social rose 21% to £11.5bn, on the IAB's figures.

By spend, two of the seven are most of the market. By a course syllabus they are two of seven equal parts. Both statements are true and they will not sit in the same list.

The 7 types of digital marketing we sell

These are the seven pomegranate sells, in the order a small business usually meets them. They are a slice of the field rather than the whole of it, and each one is a thing you could buy on its own.

Search

Search is being found in results nobody paid for. It covers what the site is built from, what each page says, and who else on the internet refers to you.

It is the slowest of the seven and the only one that keeps returning something after you stop paying for it.

Paid search

Paid search answers the same question by buying the click instead of earning it. You appear when somebody searches, you pay when they arrive, and it stops the day the card does.

Social

Social is what gets posted, what gets answered, and what gets advertised on the feeds. Nobody scrolling was looking for you, which is why it is judged on different numbers from search.

Websites

The website is where the other six send people, so its faults get charged to whichever type delivered the visitor. A slow or unclear site reads as a failure of the advertising that paid for the click.

Brand

Brand is what the business looks and sounds like before anyone has spoken to you. It has no channel of its own, which is why it is the easiest thing to defer and the most expensive thing to defer for long.

AI search

AI search is being named when somebody asks an assistant rather than a search box. About 30% of searches now show an AI summary and 53% of adults say they see them often, on Ofcom's Online Nation 2025.

All six together

The seventh is the six bought as one arrangement rather than six separate ones. It is not an extra discipline to learn, and it is worth saying plainly that it is a way of buying rather than a thing that exists in the world.

The seven types pomegranate sells, each with the job it does: search is found for free, paid search is buying the click, social is being seen, websites hold the visitor, brand decides the first impression, AI search is being named by an assistant, and the seventh is all six bought together.SEVEN TYPES, SEVEN JOBSSearchFound for freePaid searchBuying the clickSocialBeing seenWebsitesHolding themBrandFirst impressionAI searchBeing namedAll sixOne conversationThe seventh is not an eighth thing to learn. Six types and one way of buying them, which is why the counting never settles.

Which digital marketing categories overlap

Three pairs in that list are not separate purchases, and this is where a buyer most often pays twice for one thing.

Search and AI search are largely the same body of work on two surfaces. Most of what gets an assistant to name you is the search work done well, and the genuinely separate part is measurement.

Search and paid search answer the same query on different timescales, so buying both is sensible while one is still warming up and wasteful once it has. Websites and brand are judged on the same page by the same visitor, which is why redesigning one without deciding the other rarely holds.

The last row is here because it is the pair people assume overlaps, and it does not.

Picking one type to start with

Two of the seven is the usual starting point, and the choice comes from the sentence you would say out loud rather than the type you have been quoted for.

  • “Nobody can find us.” Search, with paid search alongside it only if the quarter will not wait.
  • “We get traffic but no enquiries.” The website, before anything that sends more people to it.
  • “We post and nothing happens.” Social, judged on replies and reach rather than on immediate sales.
  • “We look cheaper than we are.” Brand, which usually shows up as losing quotes you should have won.
  • “An assistant recommends somebody else.” AI search, on top of the search work rather than instead of it.

The longer version of that diagnostic, with the reasoning behind each row, is in the post on the field as a whole.

Advice, or execution

One thing worth deciding before you buy any of them is whether you are buying advice or execution, because the two are priced alike and are not alike at all.

What I don't want is a consultant pointing out the obvious and giving me more work to do. I've had that type of marketing consultant before and it wasn't a success. I need someone who can execute.

Of the seven, search, paid search, social and websites are done for you. Brand and the bundle both involve decisions only you can sign off, and a supplier who hides that is selling you a report.

If none of the sentences above is quite yours, say what is happening in your own words and the diagnosis is usually quick.

Straight answers

Still not answered? There is a person at the other end

What are the 7 types of digital marketing services?

Search, paid search, social, websites, brand, AI search, and all six bought together as one arrangement. That is the list a small business can act on, because every item is something you could order on its own. Other published lists count channels instead, which is why they include content and display advertising and arrive at a different seven.

What are the services of digital marketing?

The services are the parts of the field a supplier will actually do for you, which is narrower than the field itself. Ours are search, paid search, social, websites, brand and AI search, plus the option of taking them together. Email, affiliate, influencer and digital PR work are real parts of digital marketing that we do not sell.

What the whole field covers

Why does every list give a different number of types?

Because the lists are cut differently. A training course splits the field by channel, so content marketing and display advertising each earn a slot, where a supplier splits it by what you can buy and content sits inside search work. Neither is wrong, and knowing which cut you are reading is usually enough to stop the confusion.

How much does a digital marketing agency cost?

It depends which of the types you are buying and whether ad budget is included, which is why a single figure is rarely honest. Ask for the fee and the ad spend as two separate lines, since spend goes to the platform rather than the agency. Then ask what will exist at the end of the month that does not exist now.

What Google Ads actually costs

Is it worth it to hire a digital marketing agency?

It is worth it when the work is execution you cannot staff and the type is one that suits being done for you, such as search or paid search. It is poor value when what you are sold is advice you then have to carry out yourself. Decide which of the two you are buying before you compare any prices.

How do I know if my digital marketing agency is legit?

Ask for a breakdown of what last month's fee bought and read whether the answer is artefacts or adjectives. Pages published, campaigns restructured and problems fixed are checkable, where momentum, visibility and optimisation are not. A supplier who resents the question has answered it.

Do I need all 7 types of digital marketing?

Almost nobody buys all seven at once, and two is the usual starting point outside businesses that already have a marketing department. Pick by the symptom you would describe out loud rather than by the count. If the website cannot hold a visitor, it comes before anything designed to send more visitors to it.
