Somebody has quoted you £99 a month and you cannot say what is wrong with it. Cheap SEO marketing is usually judged on instinct, which is why the argument goes nowhere: the buyer suspects, the seller reassures, and nobody produces a number.
There is a number, and it is division. A monthly fee buys a quantity of somebody's time, and published day rates say what that time costs. Everything else on this page follows from that one sum, including whether the supplier is being straight with you.
It matters because most of the buying is done without a marketing department to translate the quote. There were 5.7 million private sector businesses in the UK at the start of 2025, and 5.64 million of them had fewer than 50 people, on the Department for Business and Trade's figures.
£1,200 per month would pay for new vans and leave a generous amount left over to buy labour saving plant equipment [...] You're giving up a week's wage every month, is SEO worth it?

That is the comparison a small buyer actually runs. Not this agency against that agency, but the fee against the vans, the wages and the kit the same money would have covered.
What a budget SEO fee buys in hours
The UK benchmark day rate for an SEO consultant is £374, against £418 for marketing and communications overall, on YunoJuno's 2026 rates report. Over an eight hour day that is £46.75 an hour.
Divide a monthly fee by that and you have the hours it can possibly contain. It is a ceiling rather than an estimate, because a fee also carries software, overheads and margin, so the real hours are always fewer than the sum says.
Two hours a month is a login, a look at a dashboard and an email. It is not a keyword decision, a page rewritten, a technical fault found, and a report a person actually wrote. Budget SEO fails on capacity long before it fails on competence.
The same sum, run on a salary instead
The salary route gives the same answer from the other side. The average UK marketing executive base salary is £30,280 across 6,100 reported salaries, on Indeed's figures, which is over £2,500 a month in pay alone before employer costs, software or a desk.
None of this says cheap SEO marketing is dishonest. It says a low fee is small, and the seller has to close the gap somehow, which is what the rate per hour turns into once a retainer is written.
The 2-3k minimum is mostly an agency covering its own overhead, not a sign it'll work for you.
A UK agency seller, r/smallbusinessuk, June 2026
That cuts both ways and it is worth holding onto. A high minimum is not proof of quality either, and the sum above is the only thing that reads the same from both directions.
What cheap SEO marketing usually is at that price
Cheap SEO is rarely fraud. It is a real service, sold at a price that fits the hours, and the hours decide which activities are physically available.
So cheap SEO marketing is best read as a menu shortened by arithmetic. The activities below are the ones that survive a two hour month, and every one of them is genuinely delivered.
The cheap SEO services you are most often sold
| What arrives | What it costs the seller | What it was assumed to be |
|---|---|---|
| An automated audit report | Minutes, from a tool licence | A person reading your site |
| Directory and citation submissions | A batch job, once | Ongoing local search work |
| Meta titles rewritten in bulk | An afternoon, once | Pages rewritten for buyers |
| Two short posts a month | An hour, generated | Content somebody wanted to read |
| A monthly ranking email | Minutes, scheduled | A report a person wrote |
Every row is a genuine deliverable. None of them is the thing the buyer thought they had bought.
The tell is not the price, it is the vocabulary. A proposal that names activities rather than artefacts has left itself nothing to hand over at the end of the month.
There is one claim that settles it faster than any of this. Google's own documentation says plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns buyers away from anyone who says otherwise, in its guidance on hiring an SEO.

So the useful question at any price is what will arrive, dated and in writing. That is a short list, and the lines a quote has to name are the same five whether the fee is £99 or £2,000.
Where low cost SEO is genuinely the right call
Some businesses do not need a retainer, and saying so costs us work we should not want. Low cost SEO is the correct answer more often than an agency page will ever admit, and cheap SEO marketing bought for a job that finishes is not a compromise.
So is cheap SEO worth it?
It is worth it when the job is genuinely small and genuinely finite. One location, one service, a site that already loads properly, and a market where the competition is three other local firms.
- A single trade business serving one town, where a Google Business Profile, a handful of honest pages and steady reviews do most of the available work.
- A business whose enquiries come from referral and repeat custom, where search is a shopfront rather than a pipeline.
- A site that has never been fixed technically, where one paid audit is worth more than twelve months of anything else.
- A new business with no site yet, where the money belongs in the website before it belongs in search.
In every one of those cases a monthly fee is the expensive mistake, not the cheap one. You would be renting attention to a job that finishes, and buying well at a small scale means buying the finite thing and then stopping.
The honest way to find out is to ask somebody to look and tell you it is not needed. We publish a written audit before anything is bought precisely so that answer is available, and you can ask what your own site actually needs without a proposal attached to it.

Affordable SEO for small business, done properly
Where a small budget is right but the job is not finite, the answer is fewer things done fully. Affordable SEO for small business works when the scope shrinks and the depth does not.
That means one page rewritten properly this month instead of six touched. One technical fault found and fixed instead of a report listing forty. A short list, finished, and written down where you can see it.
It also means the fee stays legible. Ad spend is a separate line paid direct to the platform, never folded into a percentage, so the money doing the work and the money buying the clicks never blur into one number. That is the difference between cheap SEO marketing and a small budget spent well.
The honest floor, and ours
The floor for cheap SEO marketing is roughly where the arithmetic above stops embarrassing itself: several hundred pounds a month, which is about nine or ten hours of somebody's time before anyone has made a living from it.
Ours is published rather than quoted. Plans start at £445 a month, £950 at the middle tier and £2,250 and up where the scope is agreed page by page, with the tiers and what sits inside each one on the search page.
The audit before it is free and written, and ad spend is yours, paid direct to Google. If a monthly plan is the wrong shape entirely, how the work gets packaged is the more useful comparison.
None of that makes a £99 quote a lie. Cheap SEO marketing is a small purchase, and the only mistake worth avoiding is expecting a large one. Search is also one part of a wider field, and where it sits among the rest decides whether it was the right thing to buy at all.
