SEO copywriting courses: the paid and free ones worth it

Why SEO copywriting is worth learning

The days of stuffing a page with the same phrase forty times are long gone. Search engines now weigh whether a page answers the question the searcher typed, and whether a human would be glad they clicked.

SEO copywriting is the bridge between the technical side of search and writing people enjoy reading. If you run a business, your pages, blog posts and product descriptions are working assets. They keep answering questions while you sleep. If you work in marketing, better copy means better traffic, more enquiries from the same visitors, and a clearer case for the budget you spend.

It is a skill you can learn from a course, from a YouTube channel, or from writing fifty pages badly and paying attention to what happened. A course is simply the fastest of the three.

The three routes, and what each one actually costs you.

The paid courses

A paid course buys you three things a free one rarely does: an order to learn things in, someone to answer your questions, and a certificate at the end.

Reliablesoft Academy: the digital marketing bundle

Reliablesoft's content marketing course sits inside a bundle of nine, alongside SEO and general digital marketing. Pass two exams and you hold their SEO and digital marketing certification. The material is updated as search changes, and it starts from nothing, so it suits beginners and anyone who wants the whole picture rather than one slice of it. Business owners tend to get the most out of it, because it covers the other channels they are also responsible for.

SuccessWorks: SEO copywriting certification

Taught by Heather Lloyd-Martin, who Forbes called the pioneer of SEO copywriting. The focus is practical: researching keywords, structuring a page around them, and writing copy that persuades somebody to act. It is aimed at people who want a formal credential, and at experienced writers moving their skills across to the web.

Yoast SEO Academy: SEO copywriting training

Yoast is the standard name in WordPress SEO, and their training reflects it. The course is a clear step-by-step process covering keyword research, content structure, readability and conversion. You get a certificate at the end. Yoast say more than 500,000 students have enrolled in their academy, which tells you the material has been through a lot of hands. Best suited to beginners and improvers.

Udemy: copywriting and SEO with ChatGPT

This one stands out for building AI tools into the workflow rather than treating them as a threat. It mixes persuasive copywriting with practical SEO, and you finish with a certificate of completion. Udemy's accreditation varies by course, so treat the certificate as evidence of effort rather than a formal qualification. Good for newcomers, freelancers and consultants.

Media Training Ltd: copywriting for SEO, London and live online

If you learn better with a person in the room, this UK course is taught live, in London or online, with direct feedback on your work. It covers keyword research, on-page optimisation and link building. Reviewers describe it as good all-round tuition for copywriters at any level of experience.

SC Training: SEO content and copywriting

Aimed at marketers and content managers rather than absolute beginners. It leans towards planning: how to write persuasive, high-ranking copy for a general or a narrow audience, plus content planning, keyword research, and the technical items that affect a page's chances, such as site speed and how it behaves on a phone.

The free courses

On a tight budget, these will take you a long way before you spend anything.

  • YouTube tutorials. Tyson 4D runs multi-hour beginner copywriting courses, and Ahrefs, Surfer and CopyThat all publish expert-led walkthroughs. No certificate, but you can watch somebody do keyword research and page structure rather than read about it.
  • SC Training's free SEO course. The same outfit as the paid course above offers a free one covering the fundamentals: how search works, keyword research, content planning and copywriting principles. A sensible thing to finish before you pay for anything.
  • Jeremy Mac's free SEO copywriting course. A ten-minute primer on what SEO copywriting is, what the job involves, and which tools you need. Useful if you are not yet sure the field is for you.
  • Reddit, at r/copywriting and r/SEO. Not a course, but professionals share resources, critique each other's work and argue about tactics in public. You can post your own writing and get it pulled apart, which is worth more than most modules.

What a certification is actually worth

Free certifications in this corner of the field are thin on the ground. The paid ones are worth having for one reason: a claim on a CV is a claim, and a named certificate from a recognised trainer is checkable. It signals to an employer or a client that somebody other than you has looked at your work.

It will not do the job on its own. A folder of pages you have written, with the traffic they earned before and after, beats any certificate in a client meeting. The certificate helps you get into the meeting.

How to choose the course that fits you

Four questions, and what each answer points you towards.

Two more filters. If your goal is a stronger CV, weight the ones with a recognised certificate: Yoast, Reliablesoft and SuccessWorks. And check when the material was last updated, because search changes and a course recorded four years ago will teach you tactics that no longer hold.

The skills a good course leaves you with

  • Keyword research: finding the exact phrases your audience types, rather than the ones you would use.
  • Content strategy: a plan for which pages exist and what each one is for.
  • On-page SEO: titles, meta descriptions and headings that describe the page honestly.
  • Readability: writing that keeps somebody on the page to the end.
  • Persuasion: closing lines and calls to action that a reader acts on.
  • Structure: formatting long pieces so they can be skimmed and still land.
  • Search intent: working out why somebody typed the phrase, not just what they typed.

What the return looks like

Sci-Tech Today's 2025 round-up of SEO statistics puts the average return on SEO at between 200% and 275%, which is high against most marketing spend. The same round-up reports that 74% of marketers name content as their main SEO tactic. Neither figure is a promise about your business, and any course that quotes numbers like these as though they were is selling rather than teaching.

The goal is not just to rank. It is to be worth reading once you do.

Where to start

If you have never done this before, start free. Watch a few hours of YouTube, finish SC Training's free course, then rewrite one page of your own site and watch what happens over the following month. If you still want the structure and the certificate after that, you will pick a paid course far better than you would have picked it today.

And if the honest answer is that you do not have the weeks to spare, that is a legitimate answer too. pomegranate does this work for small businesses who would rather hand it over.

Straight answers

Is SEO copywriting hard to learn?

It takes practice rather than talent. The writing half is a craft you improve by doing it badly and then doing it again, and the search half is a set of rules you can learn in an afternoon. Most decent courses assume you are starting from nothing and break each idea into steps you can follow. The people who get good are the ones who keep going after the course ends.

Do I need to be a strong writer already?

It helps, but it is not the barrier people expect. Clear, plain writing beats clever writing on almost every commercial page, and clarity is more teachable than style. The technical side, which is keyword research, page structure and headings, is learnable by anybody willing to follow a process. If you can explain your work to a friend in the pub, you have enough raw material to build on.

How quickly will I see results from better copy?

Slower than you want. A rewritten page can move within a few weeks if the site is already healthy and the page was close to ranking, but a genuine change in how much traffic your site earns usually takes several months of consistent work. Anyone quoting a fixed timescale is guessing. Treat the first three months as the period where you find out which pages respond at all.

Are the free courses good enough on their own?

For the fundamentals, yes. A free course will teach you what SEO copywriting is, how keyword research works, and how to structure a page, and that covers most of what a small business needs. What free training rarely offers is depth, someone to review your work, and a certificate you can show a client. Start free, and pay only once you know what you still cannot do.

What is the difference between SEO and copywriting?

SEO is the work of helping a page be found: the research, the structure, the technical side of a website. Copywriting is the work of persuading the person who arrives. SEO copywriting is doing both in the same sentence, which is harder than it sounds, because writing that pleases a search engine and writing that moves a reader used to pull in opposite directions. They no longer do.

  1. You send the form. Within one working day a written reply arrives, from a person.

  2. A short audit follows, in plain English, with the price of fixing what it finds.

  3. If it reads right, work starts inside a week. If not, keep the audit.
