Technical SEO basics
There are important technical SEO basics to consider when optimising a website and relevant pages in question (PIQs): website architecture, indexing, website core vitals, security, data highlighting and finally location and language optimisation.
We will go through each of those elements further down the page.
This London technical SEO agency begins by focusing on site architecture
Whether a London technical SEO agency or an agency further afield to us; all paths stem from site architecture.
Ideally we want to keep the architecture logically structured - this, perhaps, means that we list products under the ‘.../products/…’ subdirectory and blog posts listed under a ‘.../blog/…’ subdirectory.
We know that Google’s crawlers have a job to do, and we like to try our best to make it easier for them to crawl. This means we are advocates of sitemaps and also keeping the architecture of a website ‘3 clicks or less deep’ from the landing page - meaning that: from the landing page any user (or crawler) can access every page on the website within 3 clicks or less.
There can also be errors in site architecture stemming from broken links, missing redirects and no preferred domain being chosen - we aim to address all of these issues in our service.
Website SEO optimisation must prioritise indexing as a main objective
We briefly mentioned ‘crawlers’ in the paragraph above - this leads us onto our next objective; to get your website and desired PIQs indexed by Google and other search engines!
Getting all PIQs indexed is a necessary part of website SEO optimisation, as if a page is not indexed by Google, it is impossible to rank for any keywords and therefore impossible to attract an audience to your website.
We’ve mentioned sitemaps briefly above, a sitemap is effectively a list of all of the pages, contained within your website (or domain), that you would like to be indexed by a search engine. You can also have different types of sitemaps (images, videos and news) however we’ll save discussing those for our blog posts.
There can be issues with duplicate content on two (or more) PIQs, for this issue, we have the ability to choose a particular URL to be the ‘canonical’ URL in Google search console.
Core vitals - what are they and why are they important to a technical SEO services agency?
Core vitals are quite appropriately named as they are central to the work that a technical SEO services agency does… But what does it actually mean?
‘Core Web Vitals is a set of metrics that measure real-world user experience for loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability of the page.’ -Google (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/core-web-vitals)
There are several pieces to this puzzle that we aim to focus on; page size and load speed, http requests that are made and how minimised are the CSS and javascript; there are also some mobile considerations.
For page size we aim to get below the 3MB mark, usually by reducing image resolution whilst still keeping content pleasing and visible. If there is too much content on a page we may think about using a content delivery network (hosting content elsewhere) or utilising lazy loads (not loading content until a user has scrolled down to the relevant part of the PIQ). This may also address the page load speed issue.
For mobile and text-heavy pages we’re also fortunate to be able to use accelerated mobile pages (AMP), which keeps things light and breezy - you may have seen some news publishers using this format to boost page loading speeds. It should also be noted that webpage reactivity to mobile devices is becoming increasingly important - if the content doesn’t look right on a mobile device, the chances are it may be skipped in favor of a webpage which is more pleasing to the eye.
To reduce http requests we’ll usually first take a look at the plugins or add-ons being utilised and see what we can do to reasonably reduce this without losing anything necessary to the business.
Other on page technical SEO considerations
There are several other on page technical SEO considerations, namely security, data highlighting and specific location and language targeting.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a protocol that allows secure communication and data transmission between a website and a user’s web browser. In layman’s terms HTTP is the unsecure version of HTTPS.
As we mentioned on the on page SEO services page, data highlighting (or schema markup, as it is widely known) is the privilege of being able to highlight particular data on your website or PIQ with the goal of letting Google know precise data - such as name, products sold or opening hours - with the aim of being able to feature in select snippets on search engine results pages (SERPs).
Location and language targeting is also something to consider. To keep things simple, there are many English-speaking countries around the world; if you’re working on acquiring customers local to London, from a business located in the US, it’s probably best to use the correct GB tags on links to and from the UK-targeting pages, for the benefit of Google and its algorithm.
There can be vastly different results if using hreflang=’en-us’ versus hreflang=“en-gb”, if trying to target a British audience.
Technical SEO auditing services
Every marathon begins with the first step. This is why we begin all technical SEO with our technical SEO auditing services; until we have ‘looked under the hood’, it’s impossible for us to say how much or how little work needs doing to bring a website and PIQs up to speed.
Don’t worry, our auditing services are free.
After we show you what can be tightened up on the technicals of a website, we then leave it within your hands to hire us or to try and get the work done yourself.
Technical SEO packages
All of our technical SEO packages must begin with our free website review which can be thought of as a health check for your website.
Before we know what the canvas looks like, we can’t be sure where to begin painting.
Our paid technical SEO services can be broken down into the following:
Website architecture restructuring
Indexing guidance and execution
Page size and load speed improvement
Desktop-to-mobile site conversion
Data highlighting
Our technical SEO analysis findings will dictate how much or how little work must be done to bring your website up to speed.
In an effort to stay fair to businesses small and large; our above services are charged at the same hourly rate and the number of tasks across the number of pages in question will dictate how large the project will be.
We also offer location and language optimisation service, if this however falls out of the scope of English speaking nations, there will be an additional translator consulting fee that will be applied.
pomegranate is happy to extend a 10% discount to all charity-based projects in a bid to help others.
