What keywords to use for SEO?
After identifying your target audience, you probably want to know how to best connect with them. This is where good keyword research becomes apparent from bad keyword research.
There are several things to consider when thinking of the keywords that you should target to reach your audience:
-
Is your audience searching this keyword because they are looking for information on a topic or because they are looking to purchase something at that time
‘Informational’ keywords, such as questions or prepositions, are better targeted within the content that is being published on your website; perhaps through a blog or through media
‘Commercial’ or ‘transactional’ keywords are better used on core product or core services pages, as they
-
Although yesterday’s traffic doesn’t guarantee tomorrows… And it doesn’t guarantee tomorrows; a road that has had cars on it yesterday, will likely have a car on it at some stage in the future - unless something dramatic happens
Picking keywords that have had some traffic in the past isn’t the worst idea
Conversely, picking keywords that have huge amounts of traffic on also isn’t the best idea for a small business as the big players in your niche have probably already been focusing on acquiring that traffic for a while, and still make continuous efforts to keep that traffic

How many different sites are targeting that particular keyword and how busy are those sites generally?
The busier that competitor sites are [the more links that exist to that website from other websites] the tougher it may be to outrank that site in search engine results pages (SERPs)
-
As an example ‘SEO keyword research service’ itself is likely to be less competitive than any of the keywords made up from the 4 individual words that make it up.
‘SEO keyword research’, ‘keyword research’, ‘keyword research service’ are all keywords that will be targeted alongside ‘SEO keyword research service’. So in effect, we are targeting 1 keyword and getting 3 other targets for free.
Keyword research agency
In our view a good keyword research agency will have a few different steps in how they identify keywords to be targeted as opportunities. For pomegranate, we start all of our keyword research by asking ourselves ‘do we know the audience/customer demographic?’
We believe that knowing your audience is the root of a good keyword research strategy.
We ask ourselves questions such as:
Do we know customers’ online transacting behaviours?
Do we know customers’ pain points?
Do we know how customers prefer to receive their information?
Afterwards we tend to generate a list of broad keywords related to products, services and/or industries before we even touch any keyword research tools.
SEO Keyword research has to be the foundation that you build your SEO house upon
One thing to remember is that (return on time invested) across all of your SEO efforts is either helped or harmed at this stage by your SEO keyword research.
A years worth of time invested into high competition and low traffic keywords may not even yield the benefit of one new customer or prospect.
That same time invested into low competition and low to medium traffic keywords may yield results way before the year mark and then those results are likely to remain whilever you are continuing to target other keywords and publish content around those keywords.
Keyword analysis service
Getting it right the first time around is something that the pomegranate team doesn’t have much experience with.
We expect that, just like us, small businesses get their keyword research wrong in places on their first few attempts.
Our keyword analysis service lets us take a look at the keywords you are targeting in prominent areas around your website (titles and (sub)headings) to see how appropriate the keywords are for the niche that you are a part of.
Keyword analysis for SEO; unfortunately, yes, it’s necessary for everyone
The truth of the matter is that pomegranate could help you for years tightening up your on-page and off-page SEO… If you’re in an extremely competitive industry with lots of competitors, with much, much busier websites that your own; all of our efforts will struggle to bear fruits if we are targeting the same keywords as they are. Or even worse, if we aren’t targeting the right kind of keywords at all.
The intent behind keyword searches comes out in keyword analysis for SEO.
Keyword research analysis
As part of our keyword research service we offer a keyword research analysis as standard.
This means we hope to let you know:
The keywords that you’re currently targeting - whether consciously or not
The best-case-scenario expected traffic may have been if you were to rank #1 for those given keywords
Who currently ranks #1 for those given keywords
Do they rank for the keywords because they are targeting them specifically or has google given them the top spot because of their other (relevant) keywords that have been targeted [i.e. is the exact phrase of the keyword visible on any page]
And how difficult it could be to dethrone the current #1 ranked keyword competitors
